In my early twenties I drove a Ford Bronco. My friends had modified sports cars and raced, so I modified mine. What I ended up with was a truck that sounded like an airplane version of a sports car. I zipped around the Valley in it thinking it was cool. It was mostly comedy.
One morning on my way to work, rush hour, everyone fighting for position, I was stopped at a red light. Curbside. There was a car idling to my left. I knew I had to beat him off the light, otherwise I would run out of road and smash into a parked car a hundred and fifty feet up the street.
So the light turned green and I mashed it, trusting the sound that simulated speed, and the thing took off and moved like a boat.
He was on to me. He kept pace.
I ran out of road and had to slam the brakes, and I stopped inches from that parked car.
My hands were shaking. Heart going. An ordinary near miss, and it resolved.
Except it didn't. The rest of the drive in, I relived it, and the whole thing came over me again, hands and chest and all of it, and I kept saying it out loud.
Man, I almost hit a car. Man, I almost hit a car.
Nothing happened. The story just looped.
That loop is the whole issue. Nothing happened, and a stress response installed anyway. This is the machinery of how.
In one week I heard the same story told twice, by two people who had never met, from two different traditions.
Sadhguru told it about Shiva. Shiva stilled his body and turned his mind into a furnace.
Shunyamurti told it about the Buddha. The Buddha stilled his breath, and stilling the breath is what allowed him to still his mind.
Same picture. Two cultural frames. Thousands of miles and a few centuries apart.
Both stories are about the same mechanical fact, and it's the one this issue is built on.
Everything is moving. Stopping the movement is the entire project.
Here's the law.
Nothing is static. Not at any scale. Thought forms move. Words move once spoken. Current moves through nerves. Sensory stimuli move through nerves. The stress response moves, collapsing nerves and chakras as it goes. Those collapsed states move outward and dictate what you do next.
Subtlest to grossest, it's all in motion.
Which is why math has a problem here.
Zero cannot accurately describe a continuous field of energy that is always moving. Zero is a useful fiction. It's a place we agreed to put the pin so the equations resolve.
In nature there is no zero. There is no still. There is only slower and faster.
Your senses don't create color. Objects vibrate at a frequency and the receptors in your eyes translate that frequency into what you experience as red.
Objects in your field of view are vibrating right now, and that vibration is what's producing the shape and form and color you think you're looking at.
Sound is vibration. You know that one already.
Energy oscillates in peaks and troughs. Also known.
And the soul, as a collapsed waveform, generates its own oscillation. That's the one nobody teaches you.
Everything is humming. It was humming when you woke up. It was humming while you read the last line. It has been humming your whole life. You have just never been quiet enough to catch it.
Now the part that matters for your body.
There's a Sanskrit term, vritti. It's the surface of stress. The incoming waveform: sensory data plus emotional data, arriving together.
That waveform is what your awareness reads.
Here's what happens to it, in order:
The waveform lands on the nerve.
The sensation gets identified and tagged with a limiting belief. I'm anxious. I'm not safe. I always do this.
The sensation locks into the body.
The vritti pattern starts conditioning the nerve.
The nerve slowly freezes. Collapses.
Inflammation builds around it. A harmonic resonance of negative charge, sitting there.
It firms. Then it crystallizes.
Crystallized vritti plus the tagged stress response is what I call soma.
That's the chain. Waveform to tag to freeze to soma. Eight steps from a passing sensation to a permanent structure in your tissue.
This is where the word frequency, which gets thrown around constantly in spiritual circles, actually has a physical footprint. It isn't a vibe. It's a waveform conditioning a nerve until the nerve stops moving.
That is the drive to work. The parked car was long gone. The light was long gone. And my body ran the whole thing again on the replay, with no road and no danger anywhere near me.
The event was thirty seconds. The loop ran the length of the drive.
The package in the tissue is that chain, completed.
And when it collapses the nerve, it produces a vibration. Two forces working against each other. One wants to express. One wants to contract.
That opposition creates tension, and the tension shows up as inflammation. Allostatic load.
That is resistance. Not a feeling. A measurable physical condition produced by two forces in a body that cannot agree.
Now here is the piece I did not have language for until recently.
Qualia is the wave function of incoming sensory input.
Under normal conditions it travels straight through the nerve channels and gets perceived by your inner awareness. Clean transmission. Signal in, perception out.
But when there is a node of resistance sitting in that pathway, the qualia hits it.
And whatever you labeled that node when you made it is what gets reactivated. The story title. All the emotional content behind it.
That is the moment the words come out on their own. Man, I almost hit a car.
Nothing on the road to work asked for that. The qualia hit a node and the node had a name on it.
The eightfold path calls the clean version right action. Aware. Intentional. Not attached.
The stress response triggers the exact opposite. Ignorant. Avoidant. Attached.
And whatever you do next is not a response to what happened. It is a response to the conditioning the qualia bumped into on the way in.
Which is why the same event produces completely different behavior in two different people. They are not disagreeing about the event. Their signals are hitting different nodes.
If your interior world is clear, your exterior world is clear.
If your interior world is noisy, you export the noise.
The purpose of the spiritual journey, mechanically stated, is to bring stability to the mind.
Not peace. Not bliss. Stability.
So it's no longer vibrating outside your control. No longer oscillating between images. No longer projecting forward out of fear or backward out of sadness.
And here's the sequence nobody warns you about.
When the mind stills, the nervous system gets loud.
When the breath stills, it gets louder still.
That's not something going wrong. That's the noise floor dropping far enough that you can finally hear what's been running underneath the whole time.
That's the moment you step into energetics. The nervous system stops being plumbing and reveals itself as a receiver, a sender, and a translator of subtle energy.
Practice
This is the first practice for understanding somatics. It's also the one that runs underneath everything else in this season. About fifteen minutes.
Find a very quiet place. Get as comfortable as possible. Close your eyes.
Twenty breaths, counted. Your awareness stays inside your body. Nothing to focus on but the breath.
Each breath counts one. If your mind wanders, go back to zero and start over. That part isn't a punishment, it's the mechanism. It's what builds the concentration.
On each exhale, breathe out a little longer than the last one. The breath slows down. As it slows, your sensitivity to vibration goes up.
What you're looking for is any involuntary motion you can detect in the body.
It's subtle. Like a guitar string plucked with no sound. You feel the motion. There's no tone to it.
When you feel it, move your awareness to that location.
Identify the structure. Where is it. Does it have a temperature. Is it oscillating fast or slow.
Get intimate with it. Is it coming from a nerve? Does that nerve feel blocked, or flowing?
Then use your voice. Tell the body: vibrate faster. Vibrate more. Expand vibration. Expand vibration warmth.
Something will respond.
Here's what you'll realize. You were already tapping into that nerve. You always were. Nothing new got installed. What changed is that you finally noticed it was humming to you the whole time.
This is the practice you'll come back to for the rest of the season. Everything else assumes you can feel something.
A healthy nervous system runs bright. Biophotons up, field strong. You become a beacon.
The stress response lowers your vibration. Frozen nerve, dimmer field.
And like frequency finds like frequency. That's true from subatomic particles to galaxies, and it's true of your friendships.
Which is worth sitting with. The people who found you, found you at your frequency.
Predominantly, we find each other through the traumas we keep.
It was humming before you sat down.
It will still be humming after you get up.
The Little Book of Reprogramming SOURCE maps 108 patterns to the 108 nerve addresses where they live in the body. Two pages a day. One pattern at a time. Root to crown.
If the twenty breaths showed you where something is frozen, that's the book for what comes next.
