Have you wondered why it looks like culture is slipping into darkness?
My first fight with Keeley was at the end of our very first trip together. I was in the wrong.
My normal mode of arguing was heatedly defending my position. Justification locked in before the other person finishes speaking. I was raised in South Central, where anger was a tool - you use it to defend yourself, protect yourself, keep people at bay who you want away from you. It worked in that context. Taken into relationships and business, it was a different problem.
I was stuck in my justification. She did not meet my heat with heat. She asked questions. Repeated what I said back to me. I had nowhere to deflect to. My own words were being handed back clearly. It got me to think. Got me to calm down.
At the end, I thanked her for how she showed up. She said it came from years of practice.
That interaction started something. As I got deeper into my own practice, I looked at anger directly. What I found: anger is a tantrum with adult acceptance. The signal underneath it was always the same. I am not being heard. I am not getting my way. Therefore, force.
But in that argument, she had heard me completely. She listened to the full story. And the anger still ran. Which meant the anger was not responding to the situation. It was a stored pattern activating regardless of what was actually happening.
I went looking for the root. Found it was a behavior I had picked up from my father. Recognized it. Recognized it was not what I wanted. Found the pattern and released it - meaning I located where it lived in the body and let it go directly. Then found the clusters attached to frustration, annoyance, being bothered, being irritated. Released those as well.
Now, what used to make me angry brings me inner peace. People who show up with anger no longer pull the same charge in me. Anger no longer drives me. On a scale of zero to ten, at best, it is a three. Which means it still lives in the nervous system. That is next to be cleared - and I know exactly which addresses carry it.
I felt it again one night in Sacramento - but from a different angle.
We had been together all week. Working, talking, processing. At the end of it we got into an argument.
I could feel it from the inside. My energy rising. The certainty arriving that I was defending something true. That the situation required the force I was bringing.
And the entire time - she stayed smooth.
Not holding anything back, not performing patience. Just present while I ran what was left of the pattern.
Afterward, I sat with the contrast. She had access to something I did not have yet. Not better logic or more discipline. A different nervous system state that the same trigger could not reach.
That was the first time I understood the spiral from the outside.
The first thing I identified when I looked at what had happened: I was stuck in my story. Ruminating. The loop kept me in a state where I felt justified and needed to defend my position.
Then I recognized what that loop actually was. Feeling entitled. Feeling justified. Using comparison. Making judgment. Those are the foundations of narcissism - not as a character indictment, as a behavioral description. I had been running a facet of that pattern and calling it righteousness.
That recognition - seeing the loop as a pattern with a name - was the moment the sequence became visible. And once visible, mappable.
There are two spirals. Always both. Always available.
The upward spiral clears stress from the body.
The ancient Egyptians measured the heart against a feather at death. If the heart was heavy with what it had carried, it failed. If it was light - truly light - it passed.
I understand that now from the inside.
The soma is the compressed material that builds up around the nerves like cement over years of accumulated stress. When it clears from the spine, from the heart, from the mind, what arrives is not a feeling. It is the removal of a weight that had become so normal it was invisible. The body adjusts to its conditioning automatically. The stress becomes the baseline. You forget what unblocked feels like because the blocked state has been home long enough to feel natural.
When the heart clears, the energy that was always trying to radiate outward can finally move without obstruction. That is what the feather means. Not lightness as a metaphor. Lightness as a physical state.
For six months, I had been clearing the nerve plexus along the spine. Not a dramatic opening, gradual. Enough to feel an actual flow of energy moving upward. A slow current clears a path through frozen soma.
Then one session I linked the vibration of the heart, where it connects to the spine in the back - to the crown. Held that for ten minutes.
Then thousands of stars. A distinct visual. The crown opening. A softening of the heart. Then a reorganization of the mind, what people describe as downloads. A significant transformation moved through.
An immediate burst of peace.
I did not have a word for it at the time. What I found in research: two energy centers opening simultaneously, the heart and the crown making contact. That is what the peace was. If you have ever felt a sudden release of pressure from your chest and a clarity that arrived without effort - that is the direction this points.
My heart feels radiant. My spine is approximately eighty percent unlocked. I am more flexible now than I was in gymnastics.
And then the behavioral shift arrives. The very thought of dysregulating the nervous system starts to feel like an impossible choice. Not a moral decision. A physical one. Why lie and dysregulate when the truth is freeing? The body has been conditioned to upregulation enough that the downward movement now registers as loss rather than relief.
Vital energy rises. Clarity of mind rises. Inner peace rises. The threshold for what can trigger you increases because there is less stored stress - less accumulated emotional charge in the nervous system - for the trigger to find. Each time a stored pattern is identified and released, the next one becomes easier to find. The load decreases.
The downward spiral runs the opposite sequence. It dysregulates the nervous system. And the more we condition the nervous system toward survival - toward security, safety, short-term reward - the more we are willing to forego the spiritual connection that the upward movement requires. The cost is not immediate. It compounds. And it induces mental, physical, and spiritual disease. Not as a metaphor. As a measurable physiological outcome.
Here is what that looks like in a single emotional axis.
Unprocessed anger is stored stress in the body. It means the charge of anger - frustration, annoyance, being pissed off, being enraged - is already present in the nervous system before any trigger arrives. So when the trigger comes - someone cuts you off, someone raises their voice, someone fails to meet an expectation - the communication comes through the stress response first. If the charge behind it is strong enough, you snap before your awareness can see it happening. Before you decide anything. The body has already moved.
Anger left uncleared produces resentment. Resentment produces apathy. Apathy produces a lack of compassion. Each one conditioned deeper. And now the person you are holding the resentment for - every interaction with them runs through that lens. Through the apathy. Through the absence of compassion. The spiral compounds not because of what they do. Because of what the nervous system is carrying before they do anything.
Clear the stress response, and the trigger has nothing to attach to. The same situation that would have produced a snap now produces patience. Or compassion. Or stern certainty when that is what is needed. Same trigger. Different nervous system. Different result.
That is the spiral made physical. Not a behavioral pattern. A physiological one.
The downward spiral does not arrive fully formed. It compounds. Five steps. Each one makes the next more likely.
Step one: separation. A thought isolates an experience from its context. Something happens. The mind clips it from everything surrounding it and holds it alone.
Step two: distortion. The isolated element is evaluated through the lens of accumulated charge. What arrives at awareness is not the thing - it is the thing filtered through every prior impression. The signal bends.
During COVID, I went from not typically anxious to extremely anxious. By June 2020, nothing was solving it. The more I focused on it, the worse it got. That is distortion - the trigger fires, the nervous system reads it as fundamentally unsafe, and the reading has nothing to do with the actual situation.
Step three: compensation. My compensation was attention - more analysis, more attempts to think through it. Each pass reduced the discomfort slightly. Which made the next pass necessary.
Step four: reinforcement. Each failed attempt to solve the anxiety became proof that something was fundamentally wrong. The groove gets deeper. By the time I caught it, the anxiety had been running for months, not because the situation was that difficult, but because I had been conditioning the nerve into compression every time I focused on it.
February 2021. I recognized that the charge on the word anxiety was what was running the pattern. I released the charge directly. In 2020, I was at an eight. It has not risen above a one since.
The spiral deepened not despite the effort to solve it but because of it.
Step five: inversion. The original signal is now completely reversed. What was once an open, regulated response has become its opposite. Not just compressed - inverted. The protector becomes the threat. The caretaker becomes the controller. The truth-teller becomes the manipulator. Not as a decision. As the logical endpoint of a nervous system that has been running the compression sequence long enough.
The interruption is possible at any step. The earlier the better. At step five, the letting go practice - releasing the charge stored at the nerve address - addresses the accumulated load that made the inversion possible.
Here is what the descent looks like as it deepens.
The Zombie: pure momentum, no awareness. The Victim: everything externalized, nothing its responsibility. The Martyr: suffering as operational strategy. The Tyrant: force as the only instrument. The Narcissist: other people exist only in relation to the self's needs. The Devil: calculated extraction, connection as a tool.
These are not character judgments. They are spiral coordinates. Specific depths of compression. The compression can reverse at any step.
Dante mapped this same territory in the 14th century. The Inferno and the Paradiso are the downward and upward spiral written as theology. In the Inferno, Satan sits at the bottom of hell, frozen. That is the endpoint of the downward spiral in mythological form - the nervous system locked completely, operating purely in adversarial mode. The nine layers are the behavioral stages that produce that state. Each layer a deeper compression. Each one making the frozen state below more complete.
The Paradiso runs the opposite sequence. Moving upward. Taking on moral behaviors that open the system rather than compress it. Moving toward coherence, toward connection, toward what the nervous system is capable of when it is not locked in survival.
Baal, Moloch, Lucifer - these are not supernatural entities. They are behavioral descriptions. Psychological constructs. Organized extraction. Spectacle as control. Deception as a survival strategy. Each one describes a mode of operating when the nervous system is compressed enough to make that behavior feel rational.
The Ascended Masters are the polar-opposite coordinates: love, truth, light, awareness, beauty, order, discipline. Each one a behavioral description of what maximum upregulation looks like expressed through a human life.
The compass has always existed. The language has changed. The territory has not.
Every Ascended Master appeared at a spike in the downward direction. Not before it. During it. Lao Tzu wrote the Tao Te Ching as a civilization was collapsing. The Buddha taught at a moment of maximum fragmentation. Christ walked into the most militarized, surveilled empire on earth and taught that the kingdom was internal.
They appeared with a compass at the moment the compass was most needed.
There is no coincidence in this. As a kid, whenever someone asked what superpower I wanted - while other kids said fly, run fast, shoot lasers - I said I wanted to know everything. Not people's thoughts. How all of this works.
It led me to pursue with relentless curiosity. Old religion, new religion, spiritual practices, sciences, ancient teachings, metaphysical, occult. Seven years into the practice, I have no more questions. Just the work of connecting what I found, in grounded terms, without mysticism.
I am nervous. Every teacher who does this ends up in a bad place. Blessing and a curse. But I understand enough now to move carefully. Truth lands differently depending on how it arrives. I am still learning which door to use.
The compass needs an instrument. Something that tells you where you actually are between the two poles, not where you think you are.
Someone in my men's group asked: how do you measure integrity and what is its actual point?
The simplest, most honest answer I had was: it seems to maintain an upregulated nervous system.
I took it on as a challenge and came back with this. Integrity is thoughts, behaviors, and actions that maintain an upregulated nervous system. Place any of these on a zero to ten scale: truth, compassion, transparency, duty, courage, unity versus separation.
Score yourself honestly. Not how you aspire to operate. How you actually do. When I first started, I put my truth at an eight. Sometimes I said I would eat clean and did not. Corrections, yes. Also self-deceptions.
Four to six is the oscillating zone. Below four is descending. Above six is ascending.
Any number that is not ten is the delta - the gap between where you actually operate and the full expression of that value. That gap is where the corruption lives. Not moral failure. Architectural gap. Exactly where you are most easily swayed, manipulated, and coerced.
As these behaviors become normalized, something shifts. The body becomes a somatic truth detector.
What that means practically: as my truth score moved up and the delta closed, I started hearing gaps in people's stories. Areas where my mind was signaling - ask about this, this doesn't make sense, there is something missing here. Not accusation. Calibration. Getting a complete picture rather than the surface version.
The gaps are not always deception. Sometimes the person is limiting the information. Sometimes they are showing you the version of themselves they want you to see. Both normal. The point is, you can feel the incompleteness before the mind has processed it. The body knows.
Any truth less than your lived truth registers in the body as deception - either the person does not know what they are talking about, or something is being managed. You know before you decide what to think. That becomes a superpower.
I brought this into my coaching sessions. My clients had the same experience.
We come into this world at one hundred percent integrity. It is our environment, our beliefs, our conditioning that degrades it into the person we become.
Put a mix of young children in a room. They play together. They create together. They hug. They love freely without accounting for it first. That is our natural state. That is what one hundred percent looks like before the conditioning arrives - before they learn to hide, deflect, manage, compare, and judge.
You already start out whole. It is the accumulated stress, the advertising model, the absence of a moral compass, the inherited beliefs that downregulate us into someone who is searching for connection to something deeper.
It is already there. We are cut off from it.
Reverse engineering narcissism is the solution. Not as a judgment - as a direction of travel. A key feature of narcissism is rejection of accountability and justification of actions. Fear, obligation, and guilt as communication tools. Comparison and judgment as the operating frame. These are the behaviors of a nervous system in compression, communicating from a position of fear.
The reversal starts with compassion. Toward the other person and toward yourself for having run the pattern. You have to be willing to see the other person where they are. Assume your own accountability when it is presented to you. Not because you are required to. Because the communication cannot clear until someone does.
You are not reversing narcissism by forcing its opposite. You are softening the nervous system enough that the behaviors of compression stop feeling necessary. That is the first move. That is where the upward direction begins.
The Laws of Integrity function like the hull of a ship. The integrity has to be high enough to keep the ship afloat. Below a certain threshold, water comes in. The descent is not a decision. It is a structural failure.
The Ascended Masters are the reference points for what a ten looks like under pressure. Each one demonstrated a specific value at maximum expression, in the most hostile environment available. That is the compass at its northernmost point.
One year after the Sacramento argument, I was at Burning Man.
Seven people in the RV. We showed up on the playa around eleven at night. I told everyone: we're home. Light up what you got.
Ten minutes later, pulled over. Three miles over the speed limit. Typical of Burning Man.
For one month before that moment, I had been running a set of affirmations every morning. Seven statements, one per chakra, root to crown. Installation commands. The difference: you run them until the body defends them automatically - until the nervous system enforces the behavior without your conscious decision.
The cop came to the window. First question: are there drugs in the car?
I didn't freeze. But I remember standing beside myself, watching from outside, thinking: well. Here's your test. You tell absolute truth in all matters, do you?
My body could not produce a lie. Not a decision. The lie itself was what was frozen. The installation had moved from something I repeated consciously to something the nervous system enforced automatically. Not an intention. A body state. The difference is exactly what the cop scene revealed.
The passenger leaned over and said: none.
This happened three more times. We were eventually released.
Then the grilling started. Everyone in the car. Why didn't you speak up? Why didn't you say no?
I explained what was happening in my system. The affirmation had installed.
I sat with it for a few days. Realized what was missing: duty. I had a duty to protect everyone in that car. The throat affirmation - I tell absolute truth - was fully installed. The duty to protect was not yet at the same depth. That gap was the lesson. Not that the practice failed. That I could now see precisely where the next installation needed to go.
An upregulated nervous system maintains connection to source. I did not want to break that connection. The scene gave me clarity on exactly where the next work needed to happen.
That is how you find out which ones are complete.
The spiral moves in both directions. The affirmations are how you condition the upward direction into the body until the body runs it without being asked.
THE MORNING INSTALLATION
These are not affirmations in the positive thinking sense. They are installation commands. Say each one out loud every morning. Not once. Every morning until the body runs them before you choose to.
Crown: I honor my word that I keep to myself and to others. Third Eye: I am present in every moment and make conscious thoughts and actions. Throat: I tell absolute truth in all matters. Heart: I am compassionate to myself and to others. Solar Plexus: I am determined. I am focused. I am of high esteem. Sacral: I am creative. I follow through on my desires. Root: I am grounded. I am patient. I am rooted.
You will know they are installed when the body runs them before you decide to. When the situation arrives, and the behavior is already there, before you choose it.
That is the compass pointing upward. One minute. Seven statements. Every morning.
THE SPIRAL CHECK
Once a week, one honest look.
Pick one value from the Laws of Integrity - truth, compassion, duty, courage, transparency. Score yourself zero to ten. Not how you intend to operate. How you actually did this week.
Below six means the spiral is pulling downward in that area. That is not a judgment. That is a location. The affirmations install the upward direction. The spiral check measures whether it is working. Together, they are the compass in practice.
